Parents Checklist

We encourage you to take an active role in your student's first big step away from the nest. Contact us if we can be of help at any point, and use the resources below to guide your student in the admission process.

The Ducktales newsletter was developed as an informative piece for high school counselors, but has rich, relevant information for parents, too! Ducktales back issues can be a useful tool in the appplication and planning process.

This checklist is a student's step-by-step guide through university admissions. Remember that by showing students how to take steps on their own and reminding them to ask for help, you're building confidence and teaching them how to access resources when they need assistance. If your student has questions, they can contact the admissions counselor for your area.

  • Request and carefully read all admission materials
  • Carefully review the calendar of important dates and deadlines
  • Review the admission requirements. Take note of the UO's standard review process for admission
  • Meet with your student's high school guidance or college counselor
  • Register for and take the SAT or ACT exam
  • Have test scores sent to top choice schools
  • Request official transcripts from all high schools and colleges attended
  • Write personal essays where appropriate, in sufficient advance time to have them edited by teachers and parents
  • Request recommendations from teachers or other academic sources, giving them considerable advance notice
  • Complete and submit university applications, including transcripts, fees, recommendations, and personal essays
  • Upon acceptance, pay tuition deposits and decision forms

Once they get to college, students will be on their own to take action and make important decisions. It's essential for them to practice managing tasks and making decisions throughout the university admission process.
