This checklist is a step-by-step guide through the maze of university
admissions. Remember that by showing students how to take steps
on their own and reminding them to ask for help, you're building
confidence and teaching them how to access resources when they
need assistance.
- Request and carefully read all admission materials
- Carefully review and create a calendar of important dates
and deadlines
- Review admission
requirements. Please also take note of the UO's new comprehensive
review process for admission
- Meet with high school guidance or college counselor
- Register for and take the SAT Reasoning Test or ACT exam
- Have test scores sent to top choice schools
- Request official transcripts from all high schools and colleges
attended
- Write personal essays where appropriate, in
sufficient advance time to have them edited by teachers and
parents
- Request recommendations from teachers or other academic sources,
giving them considerable advance notice
- Complete and submit university applications, including transcripts,
fees, recommendations, and personal essays
- Upon acceptance, return tuition deposits and decision forms
by listed deadlines
Once they get to college, students will be on their own to take action and make important decisions. It's essential for them to practice managing tasks and making decisions through the university admission process.
