Sample Courses

  • Introduction to theater arts looks at play and script structure, contemporary aesthetic attitudes, and the value of theater arts to society and the individual.
  • Introduction to design focuses on the principles of design as applied to the arts of theater design, scenery, costumes, and lighting. Creative projects are intended to develop concepts of visual imagery.
  • Theater production I is an introduction to the mechanics of mounting a theatrical production, including basic construction of scenery and props, and use of lighting equipment.
  • Theater production II provides an introduction to costumes and makeup. Costume construction includes basic hand and machine sewing techniques; beginning makeup covers ingénue, beards, wounds, and fantasy.
  • Acting II is a continuation of performance principles for contemporary realistic theater with the addition of comic technique and the director-actor relationship.
  • Acting III focuses on the development of audition and improvisational skills while establishing a working file of monologue material.
  • Multicultural theater looks at the origins and development of contributions in theater and drama by various cultures including Latino and Latina, Chicano and Chicana, African American , Asian American, and Native American.

 

 

Interdisciplinary Opportunities

Theater arts can easily be integrated with studies in English, history, and education. For instance, you might want to take creative writing courses if you are interested in scripting and play-writing.
