The Department of Theater Arts combines a broad liberal arts education with practical experience through Second Season and University Theatre Productions in the Robinson Theatre.

The arts behind acting

Ah, the theater—teamwork and preparation, auditions and rehearsals. You laugh, you cry, and it is always an exhilarating and rewarding experience. Theater arts allows you to be involved in all aspects of the theater, from set design to production, from acting to directing.

Faculty members are committed to teaching theater as a liberal art, which takes the discipline beyond acting and performance. The department values theater arts as a form of cultural formation and communication as well as a path to personal growth.

You’ll learn how theater productions can move beyond entertainment into the realm of social and cultural commentaries—even historical documentaries. You’ll learn the nuts and bolts of set design and directing and take a more theoretical look in courses on script analysis and the history of theater.

The UO is situated in Eugene, Oregon—a town with a strong commitment to local theater and other performing arts. Eugene is home to the Hult Center for the Performing Arts and to a number of small, high-quality theater companies such as the Lord Leebrick Theatre Company and Willamette Reperotory Theatre. There’s also the Mad Duckling Summer Theatre for children, which performs in the university’s own Robinson Theatre.
