Undergraduate degree: B.A. in French, Spanish, Italian, Romance languages
Undergraduate minors: French, Spanish, Italian
The Department of Romance Languages offers an extensive range of courses and degree programs that focus on the languages, literatures, and cultures of French-, Italian-, and Spanish-speaking countries.
There's something wonderful about studying a foreign language—knowing that you can think and express yourself in a new and different way, knowing also that you can communicate with people whose cultures and life experiences may be totally, well—foreign—from your own.
The Department of Romance Languages is a diverse, multicultural, and multilingual academic unit that instructs and researches in French, Italian, and Spanish languages and cultures. It is one of the largest language, literature, and culture departments at the University of Oregon as well as in the Pacific Northwest.
The department is composed of a first-rate faculty of various national origins and a body of committed and talented students pursuing undergraduate minors, B.A.s, M.A.s, and Ph.D.s in the three languages. Undergraduates can major in French, Italian, Spanish, or Romance languages—a combination of two languages and cultures. Academic programs are enhanced by such activities as lectures, film festivals, study abroad programs, international conferences, and community events.
The mission of the department is to provide students with an extensive knowledge of these languages and cultures, as well as foster intellectual growth. The program promotes understanding and appreciation for French, Italian, and Spanish communities.
