Russian majors at the UO have the unique opportunity to study through the Russian and East European Studies Center (REESC). REESC takes students beyond language into the realm of Russian culture.

From language into the realm of culture

In the eastern third of Europe, throughout the northern steppes of Central Asia, and across Siberia to the Pacific Ocean live a people who have been ruled by some of the most powerful empires in history—including the Byzantine, Mongolian, Holy Roman, and Soviet empires. Despite, or perhaps because of, the vast political and religious changes in this part of the world, Russia and other Eastern European countries have some of the richest cultures in history. When you study Russian language at UO, REESC will help you expand your studies into the rich cultures of Eastern Europe, including history, literature, art, and politics.

The UO provides Russian majors with a strong academic background through an emphasis on language instruction and research opportunities. REESC is outstanding in its dedication to language as an indispensable tool for studying the culture, art and politics of Russia and Eastern Europe. The Knight Library provides more than 120,000 volumes in Russian and other Slavic and East European languages and a has direct link to the Russian Academy of Sciences Bibliography.

Your studies in Russian language and culture will extend far beyond the classroom. The UO has one of the highest success rates in the country for the number of students who are accepted into competitive study abroad programs. While at UO, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to get involved in departmental activities like the annual Russian Film Series, musical performances, and Eastern European cultural festivals. The Russian Club (Russkii Klub) is an undergraduate group within the department that sponsors activities such as holiday parties and cultural gatherings.
