Undergraduate degrees: B.A., B.S.,

This joint major combines elements of mathematics and of computer and information science into a program that offers an alternative to a major in either single discipline.

Developing team players for information-based occupations

The College of Arts and Sciences offers an undergraduate major in mathematics and computer science, leading to a bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree. It is intended to serve students who want to become knowledgeable in both fields but don’t initially want to specialize in either.

The program is designed to develop the skills necessary for employment in team-oriented, information-based occupations. You develop the skills to analyze complex problems and to compute the answers to them. The knowledge you gain in this major is hugely practical in the real world. Your knowledge in computer science allows you to work in the increasingly diverse field of information technology.

The mathematics background allows you even more flexibility. The program emphasizes mathematics as part of a liberal arts education. The courses provide basic mathematical and statistical training for students in social, biological, and physical sciences. People working in these fields can use mathematics to calculate percentages for data, and they know the proper formulae to analyze and compute data.

Points of Interest

  • This program is designed to develop skills for information-based occupations.
  • The UO has very strong programs in mathematics and in computer and information science. It was a natural progression to develop a major that combines the two.
