J.J. Burkart '03 won an Emmy Award for his student documentary, "Reclaimed Treasure: The History of Silver Falls."

J.J.'s film, co-produced with Mike Ferry, was one of two nominations in the Outstanding Student Award category from the UO. All of the nominees attended the 40th annual Northwest Regional Emmy Awards Gala in Seattle. "It was super exciting. I was all ready to start taking pictures of the other group-then they said, 'And the Emmy goes to ...,' and showed a clip of my documentary," J.J. says. "I was in shock."

Luis Salazar, a student in the magazine professional master's program, won first place, Photo Excellence Award for Picture Story, in the Associated Collegiate Press competition. His picture story was the cover story for the 2003 FLUX edition.

 

Selected Faculty Work

Professor Carol Ann Bassett has written for The New York Times, The Nation, Mother Jones, Condé Nast Traveler and numerous other national publications. She is the author of A Gathering of Stones: Journeys to the Edges of a Changing World, a finalist for the Oregon Book Award in Creative Nonfiction; and Organ Pipe: Life on the Edge, Carol Ann is interested in natural resource issues and indigenous cultures.

Assistant Professor Dan Miller is an award-winning documentary film director and has guided students in producing award-winning documentaries for public and commercial broadcast. He is currently working on documentary films regarding the history of Yankee Stadium and Kent State Univeristy.

Associate Professor Kim Sheehan's has worked at major advertising agencies in Boston, Chicago, and St. Louis. She has been a strategic consultant with several advertisers including People Magazine and Laura Ashley. She is currently working on a study that examines the potential for using e-mail as a survey instrument.
