Undergraduate degrees: B.A
The works of mind and spirit are the “humanities.” Originally, humanities dealt with the classic languages and literatures of Greece and Rome. Today, that inquiry encompasses the scope of human cultures throughout history.
The study of humanities seeks to explore the elements at the core of our Western traditions and how they relate to one another. At the University of Oregon, this examination includes the study of literature, history, languages, philosophy, the social sciences, and more. Our outstanding faculty members from a wide range of disciplines will assist you as you strive to establish intellectual coherence and integration across the disciplines. An education in the humanities provides you with the ability to think critically, write clearly, and speak compellingly.
Majoring in humanities lets you take an interdisciplinary approach to specific topics that interest you. This might include a specific chronological period, geographical area, or other interdisciplinary theme. Flexibility in your course of study is one of the benefits of a major in humanities. To help you decide which courses are best suited to your interests, the Humanities Program has an outstanding advising system. Students work closely with the program director and the on-line checklist is always available. The on-line checklist will provide up-to-date information on your standing, including what classes you’ve completed and how many credits you need to graduate.
The Humanities Center, another rich resource for students, organizes lectures, readings, and other presentations related to the humanities. There, you’ll be able to interact with poets, writers, anthropologists, and philosophers. It’s sure to inspire and motivate you as you study the wide world of the humanities.
