Residency Rules

The University of Oregon reviews each application for admission to determine the applicant's residency. The primary tool for this review is the Oregon University System's Guide to Oregon Residence Classification, which students may wish to review.

Residency classification of certain specific populations follows particular Oregon Administrative Rules (OARs), and members of these populations should review the portions of the Guide that pertain to them. These populations include:

  • Armed Forces Personnel (OAR 580-010-0035, page 3)
  • Members of Oregon Tribes (OAR 580-010-0037, page 4)
  • Non-Citizens (OAR 580-010-0040, page 5)

The Guide also includes information on Changes in Residence Classification (OAR 580-010-0041, page 5) and Review of Residence Classification Decisions by an interinstitutional residency committee (OAR 580-010-0045, page 5).

Forms and paperwork related to residency classification include:

  • Residence Information Affidavit: This form allows a student to make a case explaining how he or she qualifies as an Oregon resident. The questions asked on the form will help the Residency Classification Officer to determine whether or not the student meets the requirements for residency classification as a financially dependent or financially independent person
  • Parent, Custodian or Benefactor Residence Affidavit: This form clarifies support provided by divorced parents, legal custodians, or financial benefactors. To obtain this form, contact Brian Stanley
  • Residency Questions on the Admissions Application: This form is to be completed when the student neglects to complete the questions pertaining to residency when he or she initially applies for admission. To obtain this form, contact Brian Stanley

Questions related to residency can be addressed to Brian Stanley, UO Residency Classification Officer, at (541) 346-1231 or via e-mail.
